Thank you to all for making this event such a success - exceeding all expectations. What started out to be a small event with the vision to create a platform for the future, soon escalated into one of national interest which was strongly supported by key stakeholders and bodies from around the country. A special word of thanks to our Ministers for joining us for the day; Minister Malcom Noonan - Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform and Minister Pippa Hackett - Minister of State for Land Use and Biodiversity, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
We believe our decision to opt for a series of themed conversations - with a hand selected group of experts and stakeholders for each theme worked well. This was in large part, of course, thanks to inimitable Ella McSweeney, aided and abetted by the very able Dr. Micheál Ó Cinnéide. Ella managed to skilfully weave each contribution seamlessly into the conversation and knew what questions - and when - to ask of each and every contributor. The informal format encouraged open discussion on each topic which was enriched by the participation of the live audience present on the day and the commentary from the online audience. The day was interspersed with breaks between sessions which encouraged plenty of informal discussions and powerful networking opportunities between diverse stakeholders.
The event kicked off with a Field Trip around the Blackstairs on Friday afternoon, meeting local councillors John MacDonald & Charlie Murphy, members of the local community and farmers who shared valuable insights from their perspectives, as well as visiting sites of interest to frame the context for the event itself. We also met with Ecologist and Carlow native, Padraic Webb at Osbornes of Rathanna who shared a fascinating narrative on the Wildlife of the Blackstairs.
Live participation from an array of contributors on the day, including; Pádraic Fogarty - Irish Wildlife Trust, Anja Murray - Ecologist, Environmental Analyst, Presenter, Dr. Mary Tubridy - Irish Uplands Forum, Heritage Council, Lorcan Scott Wildlife Officer Heritage Council, Stephanie Maher – Ecologist, Dr. Liam Lysaght - Biodiversity Ireland, Dr. Brendan Dunford – Burrenbeo, Farming for Nature, Hannah Quinn-Mulligan - Farmer, Journalist, Womens Agri Group, Dr. Séamus Ó Murchú - Archaeologist, Brian Power - Ecologist, Birdwatch Ireland, Sinéad O'Brien - SWAN, Helen Lawless - Moutaineering Ireland, Ciara O'Mahoney - NPWS, Mairead Phelan - Irish Countrywomens Association, as well as the live audience of key experts and stakeholders - members of the local community, The Blackstairs Farming Group, Teagasc, LAWPRO, Carlow County Council, CCEN, Wexford County Council, Dept. of Agriculture, Coillte Nature, An Taisce, Carlow Beekeepers Association, Irish Doctors for the Environment.
